How it works
Review your timeline, access needs and other savings before you apply.
1
Talk about your goals.
We review your timeline, how much you may need to access, and your other savings. Annuities have to fit your situation.
2
Compare options.
I compare rates, term lengths and surrender schedules from multiple insurance companies.
3
Apply and lock in your term.
You fund the annuity with a lump sum. The issuing insurance company credits the declared rate for the term in your contract. Interest grows tax-deferred until you withdraw it.
Common questions
What is a MYGA?
A multi-year fixed annuity. You put in a lump sum, and the insurance company credits a set interest rate for a set number of years, typically 3 to 10. Rates and terms are set by the issuing insurance company and depend on the contract.
Is a MYGA the same as a bank CD?
No. A MYGA is an insurance contract issued by an insurance company, not a bank CD. It is not FDIC insured and is not a deposit of any bank. It's backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.
Can I take money out early?
Many contracts allow a small yearly withdrawal (often around 10%). Taking out more during the surrender period means surrender charges apply, and some contracts also have a market value adjustment. Every contract is different, so we'll go over the details before you apply.
What happens at the end of the term?
You can usually withdraw the money, roll it into a new annuity, or let it renew at the company's new declared rate. You'll get a window to decide.
How are MYGAs taxed?
Interest grows tax-deferred and is taxed as ordinary income when withdrawn. Withdrawals before age 59½ may also face a 10% federal tax penalty. Talk with your tax advisor about your situation.
